These belt plates were specifically designed for enlisted mounted dragoons or riflemen.
The plate is in very good non-dug condition. It is constructed with a die-struck, rolled brass face that features large raised letters "US". The face has a nice bronze colored patina and is free of any major nicks or scratches.
The reverse is complete with 100% of the lead fill and both puppy paw style posts and tongue.
What makes this belt plate different from the infantry oval plates is that the posts are found behind the letter "S" and the tongue behind the letter "U". This was opposite from the infantry plate. [ad]
