SOLDIER ART CANTEEN WITH PAINTED CAMP SCENE

$1,500.00 SOLD

Item Code: 217-222

Model 1858 smoothside canteen with no cover or sling. The body is in excellent condition with no dings or dents. All three sling keepers are present as are the chain, pull-ring and cork. The pewter spout has a small rolled edge at top. One side of the canteen was completely painted a dark brown and has a lighter colored painted sling running from the bottom keeper to the two side keepers. This is very well done but unfortunately about 65% of the paint has chipped off but enough remains to get the idea. The painted sling has some chipping but most is around the center of the panel.

The opposite side has a camp scene showing tents in a green field with a US flag on a pole and soldiers sitting around a camp fire. The center of the scene shows a Company street of 8 dog tents with two wall-tents at the end of the street. Above the wall-tents waves a US flag on a pole. Outside the dog tents are three stacks of muskets, a cannon and a soldier wearing a greatcoat. Off to the left side are two soldiers by a fire, they are also wearing greatcoats while a third walks guard behind them. In the left background is another wall-tent and stack of muskets. The right background shows some soldiers around a cook fire with a Company kettle on a spit over the fire. A rail fence runs in the background behind the camp. This side also has some chipping but it is not as severe as on the opposite side. Approx. 85%-90% of the paint remains.
