This Civil War artifact is a fine, seldom-seen example of a wool-covered, Federal Model 1858 smoothside canteen as was issued to Union forces in the war. The rare canteen is an Indianapolis-style specimen product believed to made by the Jacob Voegtle firm with its slightly tapered, thin pewter spout, a stopper with a tin disc on top and a round iron screw-nut with slots below. It also has a New York style stopper chain, and unique to this accoutrement are the three ½” wide iron loops that hold a patented a 7/8” wide, heavy twill-cloth covered, rubber shoulder strap. Canteen consists of two circular sections of pressed tin formed to an oblate spheroid pattern that is soldered together along the rim.
Canteen still retains its original, brown wool cover that displays normal fading, soiling and staining along 3 or 4 small spots of thinning. No tears, holes, fraying or repairs visible. Spaced along the rim are three iron loops that holds the twill-cloth covered rubber shoulder strap looped and riveted through a single tin, two-prong clasp. Rubber sling / strap is in excellent original condition is rolled up with just some minor edge fraying. Canteen is complete with its iron pull ring, cork stopper, and chain. One slight 2” diameter size push on one side. A like canteen is featured on page 202 of Mike O’Donnell’s fine reference book US Army & Militia Canteens 1775-1910.
This canteen is a true survivor of the American Civil War and presents a great opportunity to acquire a rare, wool-covered Federal canteen with a seldom seen rubber strap with for your collection.
