This artifact is a good, honest example of a wool-covered, tin spheroid, smoothside canteen likely private-purchased during the Civil War, and possibly used by various state militia units.  Approximately 7” in diameter and 2½” thick, canteen wears a dark brown, smooth woven wool cover in good overall condition, a tin spout, an iron pull ring cork stopper with a cotton twine cording that ties to the sling strap at one of the three iron loops. One side of the canteen cover has two large areas of cloth thinning along with one   smaller area.  In very good original condition is an unusual two-piece, cotton cloth, double-stitched shoulder sling that has an iron buckle and clasp for adjusting the sling length. Sling wears light surface grime and shows some fraying at the loops.  Accoutrement consists of two circular sections of pressed tin formed to an oblate spheroid pattern with flat faces. A bit smaller than the Federal Model 1858 smoothside canteen, these specimens are most often affiliated with Federal provenance. No maker’s marks or stampings visible on the piece. A very good, original canteen artifact from the Civil War period.
