This is one of the standard canteens used by soldiers on both sides during the Civil War.

The body of this canteen is in good condition with no major dents. The body is covered with a brown wool cloth that has become quite dirty and somewhat threadbare over time. There is a also some mold or mildew stains on the cloth but none of it looks to be active. All three sling keepers are present and exhibit some light rust. The original chain and stopper is present but again, the chain exhibits light rust. The spout is pewter with a rolled edge; an "H" is scratched into one side of the stopper. At the center of one side of the cover is an old piece of paper that appears to have something written on it but it cannot be made out.

Overall the canteen is in good condition and just in need of a cleaning. There are a few spots where the cover has worn through but none of this really detracts from the item. These areas are small and scattered.
