The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Some, like this one, were made with concentric rings for strengthening, these are sometimes referred to as the "bulls-eye" pattern. Canteen measures approximately 7 ¾” in diameter. It is covered in blue wool. The cover is complete and in good condition, although with several moth holes. All three sling loops, the spout, and the stopper are all present. The spout is maker marked but due to wear it is difficult to read. You can make out most of "J. HALL ROHRMAN PHILA". Joseph Hall Rohrman, Philadelphia, Pa is listed as making canteens in 1863 and 1864 according to Bazelin & McGuinn. A cotton sling remains although stained and fraying in spots.
This is an excellent example of a Civil War bulls-eye canteen with cover, sling, and stopper. [jet]
