MODEL 1858 BULLSEYE CANTEEN COMPLETE WITH CORK, COVER & SLING

Item Code: 889-89

Complete Civil War Model 1858 corrugated-pattern tin canteen, often called the “Bullseye” pattern. The body consists of two circular sections of pressed-tin soldered together at the rim. The bullseye or corrugated pattern of concentric rings began in 1861 as an effort to increase the durability of the item. Fluid capacity of the canteen was three pints and its liquid contents were kept cool by means of a damp or wet wool cover.

This specimen retains its original wool cover and exhibits five extruded raised rings which are clearly impressed and visible under the brown wool cover. The cover material is in excellent condition with no holes, tears, or worn spots. There are some surface stains and dirt as you would expect from use.

Accoutrement is complete with its original shoulder sling. Sling has two holes (1/4”) in one location but is still very strong and solid. The cork stopper and iron pull ring are present and remain tied to the strap bracket with original cord. All three metal strap brackets are present. Pewter spout has no maker’s stamping but has a small hole on one side. Soldier’s drilled these holes in the spouts to eliminate the suction in the canteen and allow the water to flow. Canteen body is in excellent condition with no discernible dents.

This is an amazing example of the “Bullseye” pattern canteen makes an ideal accessory to any personal grouping, especially for the military collector. Comes in deep wood display case.  [jet]
