The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Some, like this one, were made with concentric rings for strengthening, these are sometimes referred to as the "bulls-eye" pattern. Canteen measures approximately 7 ¾” in diameter. It is covered in brown wool. The cover is complete and in excellent condition. All three sling loops, the spout, and the stopper are all present. The spout is marked "HADDEN, PORTER & BOOTH. PHILA ". This company located in Philadelphia is listed as making canteens throughout the war, according to Bazelin & McGuinn. The original cotton sling remains although it is broken and fraying in spots.
This is an excellent example of a Civil War bulls-eye canteen, maker identified and with original cover, sling, and stopper. [jet]
