The body of this canteen is in very nice shape with only one small indentation at center of one side.
The entire body is covered with a thin brown wool cover that has become dirty and slightly stained from use and age. The edge seam is tightly closed except for two areas, one at the 3 o’clock position and one at 9. The former is 4.75 inches long and the latter is approx. 2.00 inches. One of the side panels is complete and the other has four holes ranging in size from pencil eraser size to an inch square.
All three sling keepers are present as is the chain, pull-ring and most of the cork. The chain sometimes comes loose from sling keeper. The linen sling is curled but complete. It has two knots tied in it which is a sign of shortening by the wearer. Sling has usual wear spots and snags.
Pewter spout has the initials “N. T. W.” carved on it.
A very nice example of a used, standard issue, Civil War canteen. [ad]
