Spherical tin drum canteen that meas. approx. 6.50 inches across by 2.75 inches wide. The exterior was japanned or painted black originally. Paint is now 90% present with small amounts of chipping.
Each of the two side panels are slightly convex. All three sling keepers are present as are both spouts. There is a small dent on one edge near the top sling keeper while each face has some small pushes otherwise the body of the canteen is in good condition.
Sling is present and looks complete but it is broken in one spot. Sling is made of herringboned canvas with a plain iron adjustment buckle. Sling has a good bit of surface dirt and rust discoloration. It appears that the sling was in contact with an iron object that got wet, rusted and ate away the sling. Iron adjustment buckle is also rusted.
Several examples of this type of canteen can be found on pages 156, 159 & 160 of “CIVIL WAR CANTEENS” by Sylvia and O’Donnell 1989 edition.
