The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Canteen measures approximately 7 ¾” in diameter. It is covered in brown wool. The cover is complete and in good condition with only minor stains and wear. All three sling loops, the spout, stopper and chain are all present. The spout is not maker marked but has a small hole on the side. This is a field modification soldiers made to allow the water to flow freely. This is a New York Depot canteen as it has the iron chain connecting the stopper ring to one of the side strap brackets. Stopper may be a replacement.
This is a solid example of a Civil War smooth-side canteen from the New York Depot. [jet]
