$400.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 33-197

The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Canteen measures approximately 7 ¾” in diameter. It is covered in brown wool. The cover is complete and in good condition with only minor wear on one side. The stitched seam is perfect all around. The three sling loops, the spout, and stopper are all present. The spout is maker marked “J. C. JOHNSON & CO. / FEB. 5, 65”. Johnson received a contract for 100,000 finished canteens. This is a New York Depot canteen and it still has an iron chain connecting the stopper ring to one of the side strap brackets. The chain is complete.  A complete and original cotton shoulder strap remains on the canteen.  It is marked with inspector’s stamp and has an illegible name written on it!

This is a perfect example of a Civil War smooth-side canteen, albeit from an 1865 contract.  [jet]
