MAKER MARKED PHILADELPHIA DEPOT BULLSEYE CANTEEN & SLING WITH PARTIAL ID

$265.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 33-288

The body of this canteen is uncovered and has no dents. There is some obvious surface dirt and discoloration from age, use and storage. Stamped horizontally into the pewter spout is the maker’s mark of “HADDEN, PORTER & BOOTH, PHILA.”

The body of the canteen has all three sling keepers. The cork stopper is the typical Philadelphia Depot pattern. There is no string.

Complete linen sling is rather clean for its age and shows little wear and light surface dirt. It is not curled as is usually seen but is still nice and flat. The underside of the sling has strip of cloth sewn to it. Lifting this strip reveals a name in bold period ink “H HUHN.” An online database lists thirteen men named “HUHN” with a first initial of “H.” The canteen comes from the estate of a Pennsylvania collector and one of the men listed was from Pennsylvania but there is no way to know for sure if this is the right man.

This is a very nice looking canteen that will display well.  [ad]
