The body of this canteen has the usual shallow dent at the center of each side but is otherwise good. Stamped vertically into the pewter spout is the maker’s mark of “A. JEW…” for Albert Jewett & Co. who were prolific makers of New York Depot canteens.
The body of the canteen has all three sling keepers with one pierced with a hole for an iron stopper chain. This canteen is missing the chain but has a period replaced string attached to a Philadelphia Depot type cork stopper.
The body of the canteen is covered with a brown jean cloth that has become very dirty from age and use. One side has a hole approx. 1.75 x 2.00 inches.
Linen sling is worn and dirty from age and use but unbroken. Sling has a tied knot that shortens it to the point where it could only have been carried on a saddle.
This is a very nice veteran looking canteen that will display well. [ad]
