The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Canteen measures approximately 7 ¾” in diameter. It is covered in brown wool. The cover is complete and in fair condition with a couple of worn spots. There are many rusty stains overall. The stitched seam has a couple of small separations. One side was stenciled with crossed rifles and “D / 3” for reuse during the Indian Wars.
The three sling loops and spout are all present. No stopper. The spout is unmarked. This is a New York Depot canteen and it still has an iron chain connected to one of the side strap brackets. The chain is complete.
An original cotton shoulder strap remains on the canteen. It has separated in two spots and has been knotted together
This is a solid example of a recycled Civil War smooth-side canteen. [jet]
