This is a large smoothside canteen measuring approximately 8 ½” in diameter; nearly a whole inch larger in diameter than the US-made canteens. It is constructed in typical “Model 1858” style with three strap brackets. The spout however is made of tin. The unusual characteristics of this canteen suggest it is of Confederate manufacture.
It remains in solid condition while the tin surface is lightly rusted and has a dark brown patina overall.
A narrow leather strap is probably original to the canteen, with a later repair. An interesting piece a canteen collector. [jet]
