HANDSOME ARTILLERY OFFICER’S HAT INSIGNIA

$565.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 744-23

This artifact from the Civil War is an excellent specimen of a Union artillery officer’s forage cap insignia constructed of stamped brass and made to look like imitation embroidery. The face of the device depicts a pair of crossed cannon. The reverse of the insignia retains the original two wire loops or pins that are soldered to the backside and serve to pin the item to the crown of the forage cap. The device is pinned to a small oval piece of pasteboard covered with black velvet. The insignia differed from the enlisted crossed cannon device in that the officer’s piece exhibited a false embroidery overall with a beaded or lined effect on the entire body. The insignia measures 1½” wide and 1” high at the highest point. An excellent uniform hat insignia for a Civil War Federal artillery officer.
