BADGE FOR THE CAVALRY CORPS, ARMY OF THE POTOMAC

$200.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-3116

Stamped brass badge consisting of a sunburst with an oval disc at center with crossed Cavalry sabers dominant. The original design for these badges had a silver sun or glory burst with an oval disc of dark blue and gold crossed sabers. This particular example is plain brass throughout.

Item meas. approx. 2.75 inches wide x 2.00 inches tall.

Reverse has two sharpened prongs.

This badge was adopted in 1863 but was not ready for distribution till mid-1864. As one officer put it “At that time General Sheridan took command and we had little time to think about badges.” Few, if any, found their way to the enlisted men although it is known that some officers wore them. Surviving examples worn by officers are very finely made and are smaller and worn as medals on the left chest. This piece was obviously for an enlisted man..
