CIVIL WAR SILK DISC KNOWN AS A PATRIOT OR SECESSION BADGE

$100.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-3580

This Civil War artifact specimen of silk is often referred to as a ‘Patriot Badge’ or a ‘Secession Badge’ used by northern and southern civilians of the period. Badge measures 2¾” in diameter and is constructed around a 2¼” diameter pasteboard disc which is covered in a dark cloth. The top of the disc is layered with three distinct and concentric, circular pieces of sky blue silk, white silk and sky blue silk again. All outer edge tips of the silk pieces are cut into ¼” wide bands which overlay each other.  Sewn to the face and centered on the silk badge is a five-pointed 1 1/8” high star of bullion with tiny gold reflectors sewn together. A small push pin for attaching the device to a jacket or bonnet is visible on the face. Disc is not maker-marked and wears just light surface grime. This unusual Civil War period badge device would make a great addition to any Civil War clothing display.
