Stamped brass hat plate consisting of a Palmetto tree with two shields at its base with the year “1776.” The details on the trunk and leaves of the Palmetto tree are good. The brass surfaces do have light surface dirt and a dark patina but otherwise the item is in good condition.
Reverse has both of the wires for attaching to a hat or cap.
Item meas. approx. 1.50 inches wide at the base and 1.75 inches long.
A somewhat similar example appears on page 102 of Stanley S. Phillips book “EXCAVATED ARTIFACTS FROM BATTLEFIELDS AND CAMPSITES OF THE CIVIL WAR 1861-1865.” The author notes that “A variety of patterns and sizes of this hat plate has been found in South Carolina campsites.”
