BOSTON LIGHT INFANTRY SHOULDER PLATE, 1840s-1860s

Silver plated, sheet brass shoulder belt plate measures 4 ¼” tall x 3 ¼” wide. On the front are mounted many separate brass pieces. Top to bottom, they are: initials “B  L  I”; a tiger’s head in relief; date that the organization was founded “1798”.  The back features the three original soldered iron wires to attach the plate to the shoulder belt and original thin leather cover to protect uniform and belts from other attachment wires. Leather show some wear and is marked “2rd  S / 91”.  Bright finish and in excellent condition. See similar specimen #731 in “American Military Plates” by O’Donnell and Campbell. [jet]
