This insignia consists of the letters “MD” flanked by Lieutenant-Colonel silver oak leaves.

The letters “MD” are done in Old English script using heavy gold bullion thread and meas. approx. 1.00 inch x 1.00 inch. The oak leaves are also done in heavy gold bullion thread with some twisted bullion for the leaf main stem and branches.

The insignia is sewn to a black felt backing that is cut to fit the rank field of a pair of brush epaulettes. The felt is almost oval in shape and meas. approx. 4.00 inches across. The edges are rough cut and were probably folded under when sewn to the epaulette.

The condition of this pair of insignia is very good. There is some darkening to the bullion but that is normal. All the thread is still tightly in place with no unraveling or other type of damage. The thread is anchored to small pieces of cheese-cloth type material on the underside of the insignia and that has helped to maintain stability.  [ad]
