This embroidered officer’s hat insignia shows the regulation crossed sabers indicating cavalry service. The insignia was trimmed down to a rectangle, something we see done by officers for wear on the front of a low crown kepi or chasseur style forage cap. The bullion shows no fraying and the drags of the scabbards are still outlined with a short length of jaceron wire. The sabers have largely oxidized to a dull silver, but some bullion strands show traces of gilt. A light brown backing is still in place. The edges were trimmed a bit unevenly, likely by the officer himself in camp. This is a nice example of Union cavalry officer’s hat or cap insignia as it would have been worn on campaign. [sr]
