ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR FEDERAL CAVALRY SWORD KNOT IN VERY GOOD CONDITION

$395.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M23037

Issued to Union horsemen during the war, this 38” long, leather strap is in very good complete condition. The 1” wide, black bridle leather device is looped upon itself to make a 19” long, strong leather wrist loop. Artifact is held together and tightened by two leather adjuster loops and features a plaited full set of thin cut tassels at one end. Five or six of the tassel end tips have broken away, else very good. The bridle leather has a remarkably smooth appearance on the dry surface and shows just very light crazing at the edges. No maker’s stamp visible. Does show a few scuff marks on the loop.

As part of the cavalry trooper’s equipment during battle, the knot was secured to the sword hilt and then looped around the cavalryman’s wrist. Its purpose was to enable the combatant to retain possession of his edged weapon should he receive a blow that loosed the blade from his grip. These original, black bridle leather sword knots are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain today. Definitely would make a special addition to any leather collection or Federal cavalry display.
