Leather sling with brass buckle, plate and socket. Leather neck strap meas. approx. 1.75 inches wide and is approx. 51.00 inches long. The surface of the leather has light crackling with only a very small area of surface loss. The apex of the neck strap is torn about half way through. The way the piece is mounted it should prevent the tear from getting any worse. Approx. 6.50 inches from the apex is a hole in the leather. This has every appearance of being a bullet or shrapnel hole. The size, shape and cleanness of the cut suggest a bullet or shrapnel.

The sling ends at the bottom with a thick padded heart shaped piece of leather with a corresponding brass face that anchors a brass socket for holding the flagstaff. Off to one side is a large single tongued, brass adjuster buckle, similar to the double tongue version seen on the cavalry carbine sling. Brass is in good condition with matching patina. The piece is mounted on a board covered with white foam-core material. The apex of the sling is draped over an arched block of wood with two thin plexiglass strips holding the item in place. One is up high while the other is placed low. Mounting is well done and really stabilizes the item and causes the bullet/shrapnel hole to stand out.
