Item Code: 637-147

This Federal officer’s belt rig is typical of those worn by most officers during the Civil War. Consists of a Model 1851 brass rectangular eagle waist belt plate matched to an officer’s black leather waist belt.

In good overall condition, the convex-shaped brass plate device measures 51 mm x 82 mm. Per U.S. General Order # 31, device is constructed of gilt cast brass with an integral spread-winged eagle and laurel wreath motif on the face. This plate specimen has a stippled background and features the spreadwinged eagle with a shield on his breast. He grips an olive branch with his right talon and holds three arrows in his left talon. An integral laurel wreath encompasses the eagle with the wreath tips extending above the wings. Overall wear is evident with wear on the edges about the eagle’s feathers and the shield device. Higher protruding areas such as the shield’s surface reflect even wear. Else very good. Letters in the national motto are lightly worn and pronounce “E PLURIBUS ENUM” in clear letters. A single row of eight 5-pointed stars sits above the motto. A brass tongue is applied to the reverse. Plate nor keeper exhibit benchmarks. No maker’s mark is visible on the back. Plate has acquired a very pleasing mellow bronze patina overall.

Black leather waist belt is in good condition overall but shows light surface cracking and large areas of flaking and some scuffing. Leather is strong, supple and displays no tears, or rips. Plate is looped through the belt and secured to a single brass loop with a belt clasp hook. Brass keeper secured via stitching and two rivets. Stitching is original and strong to the belt. Not resewn. Total length of the leather belt, including plate and keeper, measures 39” long. Belt leather adjuster loop with a brass D-ring has a sword keeper attached. No straps.

Here is an original Civil War M1851 Federal officer’s rectangular brass sword belt plate accompanied with an original leather waist belt.
