Item Code: 195-129

A leather & brass cavalry dress baldric used by numerous state militia cavalry companies from the 1820s up to the Civil War. In very good condition, this baldric is 2 1/8” wide belt is of heavy pasteboard covered with a black leather veneer and stitched along all the edges. Made to be worn over the shoulder. Belt furniture is all brass and includes a large brass buckle, brass loop adjuster and large scalloped half-moon belt tip. Stitched and riveted to each belt end is a brass hanger and ring that suspends the baldric’s small cartridge box.

Similar to a Civil War pistol cartridge box, this box measures 6” long x 3” high x ¾” wide and held a number of paper cartridges. Thick outer leather flap closes on the brass, pear-shaped finial on the box bottom. Original leather closure tab is strong with no tears or rips but does have minor flaking and crazing. Box is trimmed in brass hardware along the side edges. Scalloped outer flap features a brass trimmed border and a large brass insignia of crossed sabers displayed with the blade edges down. Sabers measure 3½” long x 1 5/8” high. Pinned to the flap at the upper cross saber point is a brass company letter “A”.

Leather shoulder belt has moderate crazing overall with scuffing along the edges from wear and use. No tears or rips. Brass has acquired a bronze patina overall. Nice piece of Americana.
