This leather loop was issued with the Model 1874 Cavalry Saber belt.

The item meas. approx. 8.25 inches long x 1.50 inches wide. The front has a leather keeper at each end with a wider keeper at center. The center keeper is strongly marked “U.S., ARSENAL, BENICIA” in three lines while the end keepers are marked “I” and “21.” This central keeper is flanked by four sewn loops on each side for holding cartridges. There are another twelve of these sewn leather loops across the back for a total of twenty.

Soldiers were issued two of these for an additional 40 rounds. The rest of the ammunition was carried in the Dyer cartridge box. This Hazen loop is in excellent condition and exhibits only the lightest wear.
