This artifact is an original, Civil War enlistedman's black bridle leather waist belt that was modified by an owner leather. The belt measures 39" long and is 1" wide for the entire length save for the wider portion that attaches to the hooks of an oval US plate. Belt appears to have been narrowed from its original width of 1¾" by crudely slicing off a lengthwise portion of the leather along the belt's entire length. Leather is still strong and supple and the surface exhibits mild cracking and crazing overall. No rips or tears. No maker's stamp. An original but modified leather waist belt of the Civil War period.
