This original black bridle leather waist belt and its matching brass belt plate are typical of the type worn by Federal infantrymen during the Civil War. In used condition, the leather belt follows the 1856 pattern infantry belt and measures 39" long x 1 7/8" wide. Leather belt shows no maker's mark and is in good used condition. The brass, oval waist belt plate attached to the belt is an original, regulation 1839 pattern, enlisted infantryman's accoutrement is unmarked and in very good condition. Wears a mellow bronze patina. The early, oval plate is rolled brass and die-struck with a double-border. Measures 82mm x 52mm with large letters U.S. embossed on the face. Right edge of border is slightly pressed inward. Backside of plate is lead filled and has its two puppy paw belt hooks and a single clasp hook. Lead surface is smooth with no erosion at the edges and bears a pleasing, dusky gray patina. An original, black bridle leather belt with its matching plate make a very fine adder to any collection of Civil War accoutrements.
