Here is an original set of New York infantryman’s leather accoutrements.  Set consists of bridle leather waist belt with oval “SNY” belt plate.  Belt measures 1 ¾” wide by 40” long and is well-worn.  SNY belt plate in of the arrow hook style. Brass face is in good shape and has a bronze patina. Early style brass belt keeper mounted on end with a partial maker’s stamp visible on belt nearby.

On the above belt is a leather percussion cap pouch. Outer flap has integral latch tab at bottom. Tab remains strong. Inner flap has partial stamp from New York maker. Both “ears” remain firmly stitched in place. Brass finial on bottom. Two narrow belt loops are stitched and riveted in place. No lamb’s wool remains inside the pouch. Leather shows light surface crazing overall.

Next on the belt is an infantry cartridge box.  Outer flap has surface crazing and some edge wear.  Latch tab is sewn and riveted to underside of flap. Tab remains strong.  Mounted to the center of the outer flap is a “SNY” cartridge box plate. Brass face has beautiful bronze patina matching that of the belt plate.  Inner flap has moderate surface crazing and has partial maker’s stamp.  Both “ears” remain firmly in place. Implement pouch is complete and intact.  Both cartridge tins remain in the box. Brass finial and both roller buckles are well attached on the bottom of the box. No shoulder sling.  Belt loops are sewn and riveted in place.

Lastly, there is a bayonet and scabbard, unattached, that comes with the set. Springfield socket bayonet marked “US” and with an inspector’s initial. Bayonet remains semi bright with light tan blotches scattered over the surface. Leather scabbard is complete, seven-rivet style. Body is in good condition with complete and tight stitching. Brass tip has dark patina matching other brass components of the set. Scabbard frog is very worn with major surface crazing and loss.

Condition of all leather is worn but generally soft and pliable. Leather was previously treated with a leather preservative that has caused white waxy patches to appear overall.  Needs to be cleaned regularly with soft cloth.
