Item Code: 1087-21

This cartridge box is an example of the "Pattern 1861” infantry cartridge box with shoulder sling. Outer flap is clean and in great shape with just the slightest curl to the lower corner. Oval “US” box plate is secured to the face of the box with leather thong. Closing tab is complete and unbroken. Tab is sewn to the underside of the flap. The inner flap has a St. Louis maker’s mark. This flap covers the two cartridge tins that remain. This inner flap has some light finish cracks and still retains both side “ears”. The implement pouch is present and also in very good condition. There is a light waxy build-up on inside from a leather preservative. The stitching on the body of the box is tight and unbroken. Belt straps are sewn and riveted.  Brass finial on the bottom.  Iron buckles were sewn only; both remain tightly attached.

Box measures approximately 7” x 1 ¾” x 5” (for the .58 cal. elongated ball). The two tin inserts held musket cartridges.  A 2” wide shoulder belt, ornamented with a brass eagle breast plate, is attached through belt loops and buckled to bottom of box.  The strap is unbroken. Moderate crazing to the strap.

The brass cartridge box plate and eagle shoulder belt plate are in good condition and appear original to the piece.  Both show nice detail and color.

This is a complete infantry cartridge box with sling and both accoutrement plates.   [jet]
