Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 696-41

A nice and complete specimen of a late- Civil War cartridge box by the contractor H.W. Oliver, Pittsburgh, Pa. The Oliver contract was let for 20,000 sets of infantry accoutrements of this pattern.

The characteristics of this pattern box are the embossed stamping of the U.S. within an oval replacing a like pattern plate in brass. A copper rivet is attached through the flap for the closure tab, the end-piece “Ears” are stitched through the outer flap at the top edges and a smaller roller buckle is attached for the shoulder strap. This example still retains both of it original tins. There is a U.S. ordnance department sub-inspector stamped on the outer flap located in the lower left corner which reads: L.H. NORFORK.

Overall condition: Leather flaps (outer & implement) are still supple. All stitches are tight and unbroken. Outer flap shows some mild surface crazing and rubbing in the lower right corner and on closure tab surface.
