The leather of the box is in excellent smooth supple condition with only light wear consistent with use. Attached to the front of the outer flap is a brass oval “US” cartridge box plate in very nice condition with a light patina. The box is the Pattern of 1857 for .58 elongated ball cartridges as is evidenced by the single line stitch on the latch tab, belt loops that are sewn only and matching measurements for this size box. The inner flap and implement pocket match the rest of the box in condition. Both tins are present and contain a loose Confederate Gardner bullet in dropped condition. The sling looks to be a little shorter than normal but there is no sign of it having been cut. It is believed to be the original length. The edges of the sling have a tooled line and stamped at center in two lines is a maker’s mark. The top line is too difficult to read but the bottom line reads “PORTLAND 1862.” Attached to the sling by the proper leather thong is a Model 1826 eagle breast plate in Good condition with a smooth even patina on its surface. The sling does have some light crackling throughout but nothing serious.
This is a nice honest early war item.
