US MODEL 1841 RIFLEMAN’S CARTRIDGE BOX

$895.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M23655

The leather on this box is in very good to excellent condition. The outer flap is smooth and clean with just the lightest crazing. Attached to the flap is a small Pattern 1839 oval “US” cartridge box plate still anchored at the bottom by the original leather thong. The face of the plate is in excellent untouched condition. The latch tab is attached to the underside of the flap by a single row of stitching. The surface of the tab exhibits some light to moderate wear with surface creases around the edges of the closure-hole only.

The inner flap is in even better condition than the outer flap. It is very smooth and clean with no crazing whatsoever. Both ears are present and clearly stamped into the lower face of the flap is “MADE BY J. I. PITTMAN N-Y.”

The interior of the box is also in very nice shape. The tin is still present and is divided at top into five square sections. Just below the top edge of the interior panel there is some small amounts of surface finish loss. The bottom of the box has a rounded flat topped brass finial. Since this box was meant for wear on the rifleman’s belt there are no sling roller buckles.

The back of the box has two long belt loops in good condition. The back surface of the box exhibits a fair bit of surface loss or scuff marks. This is not serious but is a minor annoyance and keeps the box from being classified as “mint.”

This is a rare box in excellent condition from the collection of the late Ralph Arnold.
