MAKER MARKED US .58 CARTRIDGE BOX WITH SLING

$750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 744-65

This box is marked on the side in two lines “C.S. STORMS-MAKER N.Y.” The outer flap is in good condition with just the lightest surface wear. Most of the leather is smooth and clean. One of the lower corners of the box is slightly curled from use. The latch tab is solid with an extended hole and is anchored to the flap by a line of stitching only. The Pattern 1839 oval US cartridge box plate is original to the box and has a nice even dark patina with a bit of peppered discoloration. Plate looks to be anchored by the original bits of leather thong.

The inner flap is smooth and has both ears firmly in place. At top are some two or three insect tracks where the surface finish has been lost. The interior has no tins but the implement pocket is present and shows signs of heavy use but is complete. The exterior body of the box is good and the bottom has both roller buckles and the brass finial. The leather is indented under the buckles which is another sign of use. The reverse still has both belt loops.

The sling looks to have always been with the box but is not quite as good. It is solid and complete but in some areas the surface finish has crackled. The original Pattern 1826 eagle breast plate is present and held in place by a piece of wire. Some of the leather surfaces feel as though they may have been treated with leather preservative.

This is a nice used box in good overall condition.
