Example of the standard issue .58 caliber cartridge box used by Union troops during the War. The box shown here is complete with its original harness leather shoulder sling (now separated on the right side) and pattern 1828 eagle breast plate. The cartridge tins are present, but are missing both of their dividers. Also the closer tab has a split/separation on one side. Stitching on the main body of this box is still intact and is tight. A lead filled US box plate is mounted on the flap. The overall condition of the leather surfaces show some signs of crazing, but the outer flap, inner flap and implement pouch is still supple. Located on the top curve of the outer flap is carved in with the figures of ##1 and the initials of JRP. Unfortunately, no known history is associated with these markings. Also, there are no visible signs of contractors or inspectors marking.
