MAKER MARKED PATTERN 1864 US CARTRIDGE BOX

This cartridge box is the Pattern 1864 box with the embossed “US” in an oval at the center. This box has been over treated with a leather preservative. We have wiped off the excess that was left behind and it has improved the appearance of the box a good bit.

There is the usual crease wear to the top of the outer flap and there is small amounts of scattered surface finish loss on each of the lower corners and along the bottom edge. The embossed “US” is clearly visible and the lower left corner has the remains of a sub-inspector’s stamp. The latch tab is attached to the underside of the outer flap by a rivet and straight line stitching. The latch tag is solid.

The interior flap is in the same condition but has a little more surface finish loss. Only one of the ears is present on the inner flap. The implement pocket is complete and in good shape with just a little surface loss on the flap. Both tins are present.

The bottom edge of the box has both roller buckles and the brass finial. The reverse has both the belt loops and sling loops. The bottom edge of the back is almost devoid of all the surface finish. Visible between the two belt loops is a maker’s mark that reads “J. H. YOUNG & CO. NEWARK, N.J.”

There is still some light residue of leather preservative in creases and cracks but this will help more than hurt. The box is still slightly greasy to the touch and a little more rubbing should correct that.

Not a bad box for the price.
