The leather on this box is in good condition.
The outer flap has just the lightest crazing and shows normal wear. The lower right corner is marked with a faint and unreadable inspectors stamp. Latch tab is slightly worn but solid. It is attached to the underside of the flap by a single line of stitching in an arc with a copper rivet at center. Maker’s mark is located just above the latch tab and reads “J. DAVY & CO. NEWARK.”
Interior of the box has both leather dividers. Finial is present at bottom and all seams are closed tight.
The reverse of the box is also in good condition and has both belt loops. One loop shows a little more wear than the other.
The Joseph Davy Company of Newark, New Jersey had four government contracts in September of 1863 for cavalry accouterments including pistol boxes.
