This Civil War leather accoutrement is an original, Federal Pattern of 1861 rifle-musket cartridge box used to hold forty, .58 caliber paper cartridges. Complete with its original, black bridle-leather shoulder sling, oval US brass box plate and twin tins, this cartridge box was the type issued to Federal infantry through the 1860’s. Because of the many contractor variations of the Pattern 1861 cartridge box supplied to the US Ordnance Dept early in the war, the department required the maker’s name on all contract procured items to allow the government to maintain control of the various box patterns. This cartridge box, produced by Christian Storms of New York City, was one of the high quality specimens provided to the Federal government during the war.

The interior box measures 6.8” x 1.4” x 5” deep. Inside cover is 3.8” wide while the outer flap, at top, measures 8” wide, and at bottom measures 8.4” wide and has end pieces (ears) sewed to it. Thin leather tool implement pocket is 6.2” x 3.5” deep and is complete with a strong and intact closure tab. Leather outer flap closure tab has light to moderate flaking to leather surface in spots. Maker’s ID “C. S. STORMS / MAKER N. Y.” is cleanly stamped on both upper sides just behind the ears. Outer flap exterior of the cartridge box is stamped with a large U. S.” on the just below the brass oval plate. Entire flap is strong and clean.

The large outer flap has its original, oval, brass box plate with a bordered rim with two letters “US” on the plate face. The fine condition plate has acquired a very pleasing, dusky bronze patina. No dents visible; some very minor spots of age discoloration. Plate measures 3 3/8” x 2 1/8” and is secured on the inside of the flap with a 1” long, leather thong remnant on one plate loops; second loop empty. Sewn to the outer flap, in a straight line, is the leather closure latch tab, 3 1/8” long by 1 1/8” wide that kept the flap from opening. A pear-shaped brass finial on the box bottom secured the latch tab. The original japanned black roller buckles that secure the shoulder billers are both tightly attached to the box bottom with two straight lines of strong stitching. Backside of box near at the top have two, stitched horizontal belt loops for the shoulder belt (strap) to pass thru. Two upright (vertical) loops for a waist belt to pass thru are sewed and riveted with a #8 copper rivet at each end.

Entire leather shoulder sling / strap and billets are intact and complete but in very supple condition. Strap does suffer from two major tears…one 2” up from the left side strap loop; one 22” upward from box. Both not completely torn thru. Remainder of strap surface is strong but suffers from major flaking and soiling overall. Strap secures to the box via billet ends and run through one of the roller buckle clasps. Shoulder sling also exhibits a very fine, regulation 1826 pattern, circular brass eagle breastplate. The metal tins inside the box are fine, original condition and both exhibit a bright, shiny coloring with some scattered areas of moderate rust pitting. One tin holds the remains of the torn leather strap billet end. Each tin has one lower division open to the front and is able to hold one bundle of ten paper cartridges and two upper divisions, one that holds six cartridges and the other four.

This complete, maker-marked M1861 cartridge box with its leather sling accoutrement is a fine, seldom-seen today specimen of the Civil War period.
