MAKER MARKED AND INSPECTED US CIVIL WAR /INDIAN WAR CARTRIDGE BOX

$575.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M24487

Very nice conditioned Pattern 1864 cartridge box. Inside this box is a wood block cut to hold 20 rounds of rimfire ammunition showing that the box continued in use into the early Indian War period.

The exterior surfaces of the box are excellent. The outer flap is as smooth and clean as any we have seen. The embossed “US” at center is crisp and sharp. The latch tab shows light wear and is attached to the underside of the flap by a rivet and straight line stitching. Rivet head has slight buildup of verdigris.

Inner flap matched the outer one in condition. Flap has both ears and the center bottom has a maker’s mark of “R. NECE / PHILAD” in an arc. Just above this is a inspector’s mark in an oval that reads “F. A. SNIFFEN / U.S. / ORD. DEPT. / SUB INSPECTOR.”

The interior body of the box and the implement pocket are excellent and the bottom of the box has both roller buckles and round brass finial.

Reverse matches the rest of the box in condition and has both the belt and sling loops. Both show little if any wear.

With the box comes a nice pair of original Civil War tins that are strong and free of dents.
