The leather of this percussion cap box is in very good condition overall. The outer flap shows light creases on the edges and some minor surface finish loss, but the leather is strong and supple. The leather underneath has a smooth surface. The latch tab surface is similar to the flap surface.
The inner flap is complete with both ears. Stitching is tight. Maker’s mark is present on flap and reads, “METZKER PHILADELPIA”. Also present is a US inspection stamp.
The interior of the box does not retain the original fleece lining. The pick is not present. The body of the box is strong and the brass finial is present at bottom.
The reverse is also good and has two complete belt loops which are attached to the body with four copper rivets.
