Here is a very good example of a rare and early Model 1839 leather cartridge box.   Likely one of the first of the early specimens made, box has no maker’s name, no inspector marks, no buckles or sling loops. Constructed from black bridle leather, this box measures 6¾” long at the bottom flap, 4½” high and is 1¼” deep. Outer flap has a slight scalloped edge and shows the two indents for a brass plate. Indents were never perforated. Flap’s leather closure tab is strong and intact with straight line stitching and no rips or tears.  Tab shows light surface cracking. Inner flap is strong and has both ears stitched.

Artifact has all original stitching that is still strong and tight with no fraying visible. Box still has its original, five-section tins. A round-ball-shaped brass finial is securely attached to the box bottom. Most leather is dry. Backside of box has a pair of tooled leather belt loops that are attached via stitching only. No sling loops. Never had them. No maker’s marks or stampings evident on this box. Information is scant on these early cartridge boxes.  This seldom seen Model 1839 specimen would make a fine addition to any military leather collection.
