This small leather cartridge box meas. approx. 5 3/8 inches wide x 3 inches high by 1 ¼ inches deep.
The outer flap is in good condition but has a heavy amount of surface crazing. Affixed to the flap are intertwined brass letters “HI.” Attached to the underside of the flap is a replacement latch tab.
The inside of the box has a wood block cut to accept 9 cartridges of approx. .54. The leather body of the box is in nice condition with a pointed final at bottom. There is some crazing to the leather. The back of the box has sling loops and brass studs.
Attached to the box is a woven cloth sling approx. 2.00 inches wide. These slings are encountered on both pre- and postwar boxes. The sling was originally an off-white color but has darkened some by age and dirt. Attached to the sling by a large pin is a clipped corner plate that bears the initials “HI” at center.
All brass is untouched.
Marked on the underside of the flap is the name “GIBSON” and scratched into the back of the plate is “V. R. GIBSON.” [ad]
