Marked Frazier's Patent 1872 leather cartridge box features a brass, “NG” on the flap. Leather is strong and supple with light crazing. Heavier crazing on latch tab and lower edge of flap. Sewn and riveted latch tab has brass grommet that fastens over brass finial. Beneath this, tab has torn. Brass pick is present. All stitching is tight. Box measures approx. 3½” x 7” x 1 ¾”.
Reverse has two sewn and riveted loops.
It has several interesting markings and patent dates on the box. It is marked, “FRAZIERS PATENT FEBY 5TH, 1872, REISSUED MCH 5TH 1878, PATENT APRIL 26TH 1878 McKENNEY & CO. NEW YORK”. These were used by National Guard units in New York and Pennsylvania during the late 1800's.
This is a very hard to find Indian War Era cartridge box. It would make a welcome addition to any collection. [sm]
