This cartridge box is the rarer of the 1864 pattern boxes ion that it was made without the inner flap. For a short time in 1864 cap boxes and cartridge boxes were made minus the inner flap with the "ears" sewn directly to the underside of the outer flap. This box is so constructed. It has all the correct features including the original tins on the inside and the implement pocket. All the leather surfaces are severely crazed but are other wide good.
Still attached to the box is the original sling in matching condition showing that the box and sling have been together for quite some time. The sling is cut for the Pattern 1826 eagle breast plate though none is present.
A close inspection on the bottom of the box reveals deep indentations under the roller buckles holding the sling in place. This is a sure indication of use.
This is a near complete cartridge box and sling in good condition. [AD]
