This is a M1874 (5th pattern) “McKeever” cartridge box. Complete and original and in solid condition. Black leather box “hinged” at the bottom with a brass rod. Leather closure tab fastens to brass finial on the top. Tab is complete and unbroken. Two narrow belt loops sewn and riveted to the back. Oval “NJ” box plate secured to front flap. Canvas loops to hold 10 .45-70 cartridges sewn to each half (20 rounds total) for a trapdoor longarm. Stitching remains strong and tight. Black leather exterior has patches of mildew and should be cleaned. A name, “L. Madden” is carved into the front flap below the plate. There was a Lawrence Madden in the 2nd New Jersey. More research needs to be done.  [jet]
