This cartridge box is a nice example of the "Pattern 1857” infantry cartridge box with shoulder sling. Outer flap exhibits some light crazing. Lower corners show slight curling from field use. Oval “US” box plate is secured to the face of the box by copper wire. Closing tab is sewn to the underside of the flap and remains unbroken.
Inner flap covers two tins that remain in place. This inner flap is marked with New York maker’s stamp, “Sproulls, Meeker & Co”. Both side “ears” remain although one is loosely attached. The implement pouch is present and complete. The stitching on the the box remains tight and unbroken. Belt straps are sewn and riveted. Large brass finial is located on the bottom of box. The two iron buckles remain on bottom and are sewn on. Box measures approximately 8” x 2” x 5” (for the .69 caliber elongated ball).
A 2” wide shoulder belt, cut for an eagle breast plate (plate not present), is attached through the upper, horizontal loops and buckled to bottom of box.
The brass cartridge box plate is in good condition with minor wear.
Leather is flexible and in overall good condition. White powdery residue from old leather treatment is found on implement pouch. This is a complete infantry cartridge box with sling and box plate. [jet]
