Larger leather box to hold cartridges and carried on the belt.  Single wide belt loop, brass finial, flaps to cover the contents, and integral percussion cap pouch. The outer flap is clearly marked “USN”. Outer flap exhibits wrinkles, cracking, and some loss of the finish. The latch tab has broken off at the point where the hole for the finial was cut, and lower portion is missing. Most interesting is a pen and ink inscription on the inside of this flap: “Pattern Box / for / Metallic / Cartridges / for [Navy Carbine][?] / July 18__”. The last two lines are difficult to make out, but “Navy Carbine” does make sense. The Navy used Sharps & Hankins carbines which used metallic cartridges. This is in need of further research!

Manufacturer mark is present on the inner flap: "NAVY YARD / PHILA / 186_". Lower portion of stamp is weak and the last digit of the date is not readable. One of the two “ears” on the side of this inner flap has come unstitched, and is included. The cap pouch still retains the lamb’s wool. A brass “weight” has been added to the end of the latch for this pouch. All of the leather is soft and pliable and stitching is still tight. The outer flap shows the most wear on this piece. The inside components and in very good condition. The period inscription makes this a very interesting piece.[jet]
