REGULATION 1861 CARTRIDGE BOX AND SLING – WITH PLATES

$750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 362-809

This cartridge box is a well-worn specimen of the "Pattern 1861” infantry cartridge box with shoulder sling. Outer flap exhibits some finish loss and significant crazing. Lower corner is curled from field use. Oval “US” box plate is secured to the face of the box. Remaining portion of closing a broken closing tab is sewn to the underside of the flap. Inner flap covers two tins that remain. This inner flap is missing one of the “ears” and the other remains loosely attached. The implement pouch is present but its flap is gone and the stitching on the left side has separated. The stitching on the left side of the box has also split.  Belt straps are sewn and riveted.  Brass finial on the bottom.  Iron buckles were sewn only; only one of which remains.

Box measures approximately 7” x 1 ¾” x 5” (for the .58 cal. elongated ball). The two tin inserts held musket cartridges.  A 1 ¾” wide shoulder belt, ornamented with a brass eagle breast plate, is attached through belt loops and buckled to bottom of box.  The strap is broken on the end where the roller buckle is missing.

The brass cartridge box plate and eagle shoulder belt plate are in good condition and appear original to the piece.  Both show nice age patina.

Leather is flexible but overall has seen heavy use.  This is a complete infantry cartridge box with sling and both accoutrement plates.   [jet]
